How to Become a Student Volunteer

View and complete the following steps to become a student volunteer:

  • At the end of the application process, all students are required to write a minimum 300-word essay on why they want to volunteer at St. Vincent Healthcare, including what gifts/talents they would bring to the program and what is their expectation of the program.
  • Students must also provide a reference letter from a teacher or school counselor. Please fax to 237-3360 or email to brenda.nagel@svh-mt.org.

New Students

Please note: volunteers must be at least 14 years old by June 1, 2016. Sorry, no exceptions.

Step 1. Complete and submit the Student Application, the Photo Consent, the Health Report and your Essay. Deadline for receiving applications is March 26, 2016. We will send you an email confirming receipt of your application. If you do not receive confirmation, please submit your application again or call us at 237-3377.

Step 2. Call Volunteer Coordinator 237-3377, between 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, to schedule an interview for you and a parent. Interviews are required for all first-time student volunteers.

Step 3. Come for your interview (new volunteers only). Interviews start February 22, 2016 and end  March 31, 2016. A parent must come with you. Wear appropriate clothing as this is an interview for a volunteer position. No shorts, tank tops or torn jeans, etc. Come to Volunteer Services in the main lobby at the North 30th St. entrance.

Step 4. A confirmation letter will be sent to your home. This letter will include the date you are scheduled for required training and your summer volunteer schedule.

Step 5. Come to your required orientation and training session! At the session you will:

  • Receive training in safety, confidentiality rules, customer service and infection control.
  • Receive a TB test. Tuberculosis evaluations (TBs) are mandatory and free at the hospital (unless you forget to have it read within 48 hours, then re-takes are $20). If these times do not fit for you, you may bring a proof of TB evaluation from your family doctor.
  • Purchase uniforms. Uniforms for all include a green St. Vincent Healthcare polo worn with khaki, black, gray or white slacks. Shirts are $15. Absolutely no shorts, short skirts, jeans or tank tops allowed.

Step 6. Begin volunteering the week of June 13, 2016. The student volunteer program ends August 12, 2016.


Returning Students

Returning student volunteers must complete the following steps.

Step 1. Complete and submit the Student ApplicationPhoto Consent, the Health Report and your EssayDeadline for receiving applications is March 25, 2016. We will send you an email confirming receipt of your application. If you do not receive confirmation, please submit your application again or call us at 237-3377.

Step 2. A confirmation letter will be sent to your home. This letter will include the date you are scheduled for required training and your summer volunteer schedule.

Step 3. Come to your required training session! At the training session you will:
