Environmental Stewardship

At St. Vincent Healthcare, we practice our core value of stewardship. We are mindful that we hold our resources in trust for the sake of the healing ministry and that our physical resources come from our patients and communities.

As an organization, we are committed to practicing environmental stewardship and educating others on ways to foster a healthy and sustainable environment. St. Vincent Healthcare's Environmental Stewardship Committee promotes, facilitates and provides resources and guidance for Environmental Stewardship efforts at St. Vincent Healthcare. We are committed to enhancing ecological and environmental awareness by working to return to the earth what has been given to us.

Reduce, Reuse and Recycle
The 17-member committee has spearheaded the effort to reduce, reuse and recycle. Our efforts have been recognized by the Green Directory Montana and by the EcoStar Award, a recognition provided by the MSU Extension Service for taking steps to reduce waste, maximize efficiency and create a safer work environment.

Examples of What We're Doing

  • Our giant steam sterilizer reduces the volume of hazardous waste by 50% and renders it harmless.
  • In the last year, St. Vincent Healthcare has recycled 25,000 pounds of office paper, 500 pounds of fluorescent lights and 100 pounds of batteries.
  • Every day, 800 pounds of cardboard are recycled.
  • Used cooking grease, scraps and motor oil are all composted or recycled.
  • Coffee grounds are saved for use in planting - and we're happy to share them with local gardeners.
