Pain Managment & Palliative Care
Palliative care is comprehensive treatment of the discomfort, symptoms, and stress of a serious illness. It helps to relieve the side effects of treatment, and is appropriate at any age and at any stage. Most importantly, palliative care can help improve your quality of life as well as that of your family members by reducing stress and the burden that may come as a result of serious illness.
St. Vincent Healthcare offers an inpatient palliative care/symptom management program. Our team consists of nurse practitioners, trained nurses, chaplains, and case managers. Working together, they can assist with:
- Emotional support (spiritual care/palliative team)
- Financial guidance (case management)
- Relief of physical symptoms and discomfort (attending physician, nurse practitioner, nurses, pharmacist, consulting therapists)
- Spiritual care (spiritual care/palliative team)
If you are admitted to the hospital because of the severity of your symptoms or as a result of serious chronic illness, your primary physician may order a palliative care consult. If you feel you could benefit from this program, please discuss it with your healthcare provider.
