Certified Diabetes Educator & Clinical Dietitian
A registered dietician for over 30 years, Doris has worked with numerous patients and families. In her current role at the St. Vincent Healthcare Diabetes Center, Doris also frequently has the chance to interact with individuals throughout the community, presenting information about how to both manage and prevent diabetes.
"I want people in our community to understand the resources available to them," she says. "That includes the successful Diabetes and Heart Prevention Program at the Billings Family YMCA."
Her desire to help educate people about diabetes - and how to reduce the risk of developing it - comes from personal experience. A number of relatives on her father’s side have Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes. Her husband also lives with the disease.
"Hearing the stories from patients who are living life to the fullest are inspirational to me," she says. "They also help other patients who may be struggling."
As she works one-on-one with patients with diabetes, she focuses her attention on the positive choices that those with diabetes are choosing to make in regard to their eating, exercise, stress management and coping skills.
"I look for ways to compliment them on the things they are doing right, she says. "Then I can help them determine what they want to do next."
