Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation

Just because you've been diagnosed with pulmonary disease or a cardiac condition doesn't mean you can't live a full and active life. And at St. Vincent Healthcare, our cardiopulmonary rehabilitation teams are here to help you improve your health and overall wellbeing.

When you participate in our cardiopulmonary rehabilitation program, you'll have an exercise program created just for you that starts where you are now and helps you gradually build strength and endurance. You'll also receive a nutrition plan, help with managing your medications and more.

Cardiac Rehabilitation
Exercise is the cornerstone of cardiac rehabilitation. Our program is formatted to help improve your quality of life, reduce your risk of future heart problems and maximize your recovery after surgery. It is designed specifically for St. Vincent Healthcare patients who have experienced a heart attack, chest pain or discomfort (angina), undergone bypass or valve repair/replacement surgery, angioplasty or any other cardiac-related procedure or problem.

There are many published reports describing the benefits of cardiac rehabilitation, which include:

  • Reduced mortality rates
  • Decreased rate of hospital readmissions
  • Improved emotional well-beingImproved exercise tolerance
  • Decreased health-care expenses
  • Reduced symptoms of angina and heart failure

This program includes:

Initial Evaluation
When you enroll in the St. Vincent cardiac rehabilitation program, you will meet with a rehabilitation therapist for an initial medical evaluation and to develop a treatment plan.

Throughout the program, your therapist will provide feedback on your progress and also report any concerns to your physician. Progress notes will be sent to your physician every 4 weeks (or more often if needed) during your participation.

An individualized exercise program will be developed to meet your physical abilities, needs and interests. If you are in the hospital, the program will begin with a low level of activity, progressing until you walk around the unit. The rehabilitation specialist will then visit with you prior to discharge to provide you with an activity and treatment plan for when you return home. You will also be encouraged to participate in group exercise classes at your own level and rate of progression. Your exercise program will generally focus on aerobic activity, but also includes muscle strengthening, flexibility, cardiac monitoring and relaxation.

Individual counseling and education classes are provided to help you understand your heart condition and the factors that may have contributed to it. These classes will help you develop skills to replace unhealthy lifestyle habits with new behaviors that improve your long-term health.
