Sleep Center - Physician Practice

An estimated 15% of the population suffers from some type of sleep disorder that makes a person feel tired, drowsy and unable to function well during the day. Some sleep disorders can actually be life threatening. The Sleep Center provides services to help patients resolve their sleep disorders by monitoring and evaluating patients during sleep. The Sleep Center is designed specifically for overnight and daytime sleep studies. While patients sleep in private bedrooms, Registered Polysomnographic Technologists observe and record sleep/wake patterns, heart and respiratory activity and body movements on sophisticated computers located in the Control Room. Physicians from a variety of medical fields work together to provide comprehensive diagnosis and treatment options. Click here for more information on The Sleep Center.

Sleep disorders most frequently recognized and treated in The Sleep Center include:

Childhood Sleep Disorders
The Sleep Center works with Pediatricians who refer children to the Sleep Center for testing of sleep-related symptoms, which are not only a problem for the young patient but the entire family.

The care of children with sleep disorders demands special expertise. There are a variety of pediatric sleep disorders, many of which exhibit symptoms such as:

  • Snoring or noisy breathing during sleep
  • Excessive daytime sleepiness
  • Attention deficit hyperactivity
  • Irritability during the day
  • School difficulties
  • "Odd" sleep behaviors

These symptoms may indicate the need for a sleep study to diagnose a childhood sleep disorder. St. Vincent Healthcare has sleep rooms just for children. The technical staff at the St. Vincent Physician Network - Sleep Center receive special training in performing pediatric sleep studies. Studies are now performed in children as young as six to nine months of age. The designated pediatric sleep study rooms, located on the SVH Pediatric floor, are designed for a kid-friendly environment, mindful of childhood fears.
