Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program

Our pulmonary rehabilitation program helps those dealing with pulmonary diseases (including, but not limited to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), emphysema, asthma, cystic fibrosis, bronchiectasis, occupational and environmental lung disease, etc.). This program includes 4 weeks of medically supervised exercise and oximetry as well as on-on-one meetings with a respiratory therapist and a dietitian.

A multi-disciplinary approach is available to meet specific patient needs and include all or some of the following professionals: Registered Nurses, Exercise Physiologists, Pulmonologists, Respiratory Therapists, Dietitians, Occupational Therapists, Psychologists and the Primary Care Physician.

Objectives of the Program:

Decreased exercise problems and improved exercise tolerance

  • Knowledge of individual exercise guidelines
  • Improved use of diaphragmatic breathing during exercise
  • Improved use of pursed lip breathing during exercise
  • Ability to perform and increase daily exercise regimen
  • Ability to monitor heart rate with exercise
  • Improved ability to perform and increase strengthening exercises and upper extremity strength training
  • Improved ability to coordinate breathing with activity
  • Decrease pain with exercise
  • Improved posture

Decreased symptomology with activities of daily living (ADLs)

  • Decreased shortness of breath with ADLs
  • Improved use of adaptive equipment
  • Increased independence in lifestyle
  • Increased upper extremity strength and endurance for functional activities
  • Improved pacing with activities
  • Improved use of joint protection techniques
  • Improved panic control
  • Improved application of stress reduction techniques
  • Increase in plans for daily activities and leisure options


Decreased symptomology and improved prevention self care

  • Proper use of metered dose inhalers
  • Proper use and care of breathing/oxygen equipment
  • Ability to cope with changed body image due to necessity to use oxygen
  • Improved understanding and administration of medications
  • Decreased use or cessation of cigarette smoking
  • Improved understanding of environmental and asthma triggers
  • Increased application of prevention techniques and avoidance of exposures
  • Increased application of hand-washing techniques for the prevention of infection
